Recent American research shows that microplastics can penetrate deep into our brains and that the amounts in our bodies keep growing. Researchers at the University of New Mexico found that, on average, 50 per cent more microplastics were found in the brains of deceased test subjects than eight years ago. This raises serious questions about the impact of plastic on our health.
What are microplastics?
Microplastics are tiny plastic particles (smaller than 5 millimetres) released through, among other things, the wear of plastic products, synthetic clothing and car tyres. They are everywhere: in the ocean, on mountains and even in the air we breathe. Microplastics have previously been found in human blood, placentas and lungs, but this new research shows that they are also present in large quantities in the brain. On average, 4,900 micrograms of plastic particles were found per gram of brain tissue, which comes down to almost 0.5 per cent of the brain’s weight. 🧠
Plastic and our health
The impact of microplastics on human health is not yet fully clear, but what we do know is worrying. The researchers found up to five times more microplastics in the brains of deceased test subjects with dementia. Although the study does not establish a direct link between microplastics and the development of dementia, it is concerning that plastic particles can accumulate so easily in our bodies.
Why make conscious choices?
This research once again underlines how important it is to make conscious choices as a consumer. At WONDR we are committed to a more sustainable future by developing vegan and natural care products. Our products are fully biodegradable. By choosing consciously, you not only reduce your own exposure to microplastics, but also contribute to a cleaner planet. 🌍💖
Science is still busy unravelling the effects of microplastics on our health, but one thing is certain: prevention is better than cure. By switching to products, such as the shampoo, conditioner and shower bars from WONDR, you make a conscious choice for the environment.
