Laundry strips or pods: which detergent should you choose?
Both are pre-dosed and handy, but they differ more than you'd think in cleaning power, environmental impact and price.
With laundry strips or pods, the best choice depends on what matters most to you. Choose pods if pure cleaning power and whiteness are your first priority, especially with stubborn stains. Choose laundry strips if you want a more compact, lighter and more eco-friendly alternative that doses flexibly and works perfectly for the everyday wash.
What are laundry strips and what are pods?
A laundry strip is a thin, concentrated sheet of detergent without water that dissolves completely in the drum. You tear off half or a whole strip, depending on the size of the load, and place it at the bottom of the drum or on top of your clothes. Because no water is added, laundry strips weigh just a few grams per wash.
A pod, also called a laundry capsule, is a pre-dosed pillow of liquid or powder detergent, wrapped in a water-soluble PVA film. You toss the pod into the drum and it dissolves during the wash. Well-known brands include Ariel, Persil and Dreft. Both are pre-dosed and easy to use, with nothing to measure or pour.
Laundry strips vs pods: the comparison
At first glance, laundry strips and pods look very similar: both are pre-dosed, both with no fuss with measuring cups. But on cleaning power, environmental impact, price and dosing they differ more than you'd think. The table below puts the main differences side by side.
| Laundry strips | Pods | |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning power on a normal wash | Fine for everyday washes | Powerful, even on a normal wash |
| Cleaning power on stubborn stains | Can fall short on heavy soiling | Stronger on grease, stains and whites |
| Environment and packaging | Plastic-free cardboard packaging, lighter transport | Often plastic packaging, PVA film around the detergent |
| Price per wash | From about €0.13 to €0.43 | On average €0.35 to €0.55, sometimes higher |
| Dosing and flexibility | Halve a strip for a small load | Always a whole pod, even for a half-full drum |
| Weight and storage | 3 to 5 grams per strip, ultra-compact | Around 20 grams per pod, more volume |
The biggest differences are therefore in flexibility and environmental impact, while pods score slightly higher on pure cleaning power on heavy soiling. Below we explain each criterion in more detail.
Cleaning power and dosing
Pods are powerful and handy, but you can't adjust the dosage. You always use a whole pod, even for a small load, so with a half-full drum you quickly use too much detergent and with a big drum possibly too little. They often also contain bleach and optical brighteners, which makes them slightly stronger on white laundry.
Laundry strips are more flexible: tear off half a strip for a small load or a whole one for a larger load. According to the Consumentenbond (the Dutch consumer association), both pods and laundry strips score well on stain removal at standard wash temperatures, although some independent tests show that laundry strips are slightly less powerful on heavily soiled laundry. For the everyday wash they are usually more than enough.
Environment and packaging
Laundry strips generally win on environmental impact: plastic-free cardboard packaging that is light and compact, with less space and weight in transport. Pods are usually packed in a plastic tub or bag and are themselves wrapped in a dissolvable PVA film.
Important to know: not every laundry strip is free of PVA, and there is debate about that too. According to OECD research, the biodegradability of PVA depends heavily on the conditions in wastewater treatment. So always check the label if you want to consciously choose a PVA-free or transparent variant.

Price and ease of use
Pods are often more expensive per wash, with prices averaging between €0.35 and €0.55, sometimes higher. Laundry strips generally cost less, from about €0.13 per wash, and thanks to flexible dosing can work out even cheaper for small loads.
Both are easy to use and pre-dosed, so you never need to measure or pour. Laundry strips are lighter and more compact to store or take with you, handy for travelling or in a small household.
When do you choose laundry strips and when pods?
Choose laundry strips for the everyday wash, a small household, or if you want to go plastic-free and dose flexibly. They are also handy for travelling thanks to their low weight and compact size.
Choose pods if you mainly want maximum cleaning power and whiteness on heavily soiled laundry, and the slightly higher price per wash isn't a problem.
